Justice League
Zac Snyder directed this but stepped aside in post production after a family tragedy and the studio got Joss Whedon in to complete Zac’s vision. (In Whedon we trust)
There were reportedly $25 million worth of reshoots for this movie, it shows and they permeate through the whole film – not in a particularly bad way, it just looks way more Whedon than Snyder in that there was a definite upswing in mood and tone, not just of the picture but of the characters as well.
This film has received some bad press since its release and I think it’s a little unwarranted. Now it’ll not be winning any awards but it’s miles better then BVS and The Suicide Squad. It hits the right notes for a superhero flick, the team dynamic works well. Ezra Miller providing the comic relief, a decent turn from Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Gal Gadot crushes it again and Ben Affleck is proving all the nay sayers wrong with this portrayal of the Batman. Not really much to say for Ray Fisher as Cyborg because he was basically a computer interface for the whole film, but he was ok.
It’s certainly not without its issues though. The studio said it had to be under 2 hours and I read somewhere that the directors edit was around the 2 hour 40 mark so that’s a lot of film left on the editing room floor ……and it shows. The extreme amount of cuts make it very jumpy and the continuity suffers a lot in places. Also the villain is lacking in substance too. Big strong cgi’d bad guy, wants to destroy the world yadda yadda yadda.
And finally the reshoots…. when they got Henry Cavill back for his he was in the middle of filming Mission Impossible 6 in which he has a moustache. They decided the only way around this was to cgi his upper lip in all the reshoots and frankly it looks like it was done by a drunk 5 year old (apologies if anyone is related to anyone that may have been involved in said cgi), by Christ it’s bad.
All of that having been said, I rather liked the film. It’s a puff piece to be sure but an enjoyable one none the less.
A step in the right direction for the DCEU.
