Was going to do my top 5 films but there’s a few more I wanted to mention and add to the list so…
Here’s my top 8 films of 2017. These are not in order of how I rated the script, acting or direction rather in order of how much I enjoyed watching them. I’ll keep the actual reviews real short as I’ve probably posted about them in more detail throughout the year.
8. Split: January 2017
A welcome return to form from ‘The Sixth Sense’ director M. Night Shyamalan. This film is seriously good. It’s a crying shame James McAvoy won’t get a nod at the Oscars for this performance, If the release date was a month earlier then it would have been in time for last year’s awards or 4 months later for this year’s but instead it’ll just go unrecognised by the powers that be.
7. Moonlight technically Oct 2016 but I saw in January 2017
This movie had me absolutely captivated from start to finish and fully deserved it’s Best Picture Oscar win. The whole budget for this picture is half of Ryan Goslings reported pay for La La land. The acting on display in this film is of the highest calibre and I can’t really praise it enough. Just watch it!
6. 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Nov 17
This is one I’ve not reviewed but I still may. If this was Kez’s top 8 then it would be much higher, she loved it ….but its not hers so it stays at 6.
This is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES).
The humour is there, I promise. But this film isn’t full of laughs. It is however full of quality. Francis McDormond, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. All giving arguably their best performances ever. People should really check this one out.
5.Wonder Woman May 17
First of the blockbusters on my list. Patty Jenkins brings this superhero to life in a stunning way. This is the movie I’d been waiting for from the DCEU after the shambles of BvS and Suicide Squad. Gal Gadot absolutely crushes this role and owns every second she’s on the screen. The no mans land scene is worth the price of the film on its own.
4.It Sep 17
Andrés Muschietti’s telling of this Stephen King book had me smiling more then any horror in recent memory. The acting from these kids is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Looking forward to the sequel.
3.Get Out March 17
Jordan Peele, best known for his comedy sketches, writes and directs this awesome film. The lead stars Daniel Kaluuya and Alison Williams are so natural and have great chemistry here. Also great to see Bradley Whitford (Josh West Wing) back on my TV.
2.The last Jedi Dec 17
What can be said about this movie that hasn’t been said? Some like it, some hate it. I enjoyed this film more the 2nd time around and I loved it the 1st time. I’ll see it again before it leaves cinemas too. Can’t get enough of it.
1.Logan. March 17
Ahhh this movie
So so so so good. The absolutely perfect end to the 17 year journey we went on with Hugh Jackman and this character. Funny, heart warming, heart breaking, exciting and enthralling. I loved it. *thunderous applause*
A little mention has to go to Odeon’s screen unseen promotion which has put 2 films on this list which almost certainly wouldn’t have been seen by me. £5 per ticket is a brilliant price for a night out to watch movies that would normally pass you by. I’ve not seen a bad one yet.
Thanks for all the nice comments to my reviews in the last year you groovy bastards.
Looking forward to next year’s movies.
