Spider-Man , Homecoming
Jon Watts (Cop Car 2015) directs this first film that features Spider-Man firmly under MCU’s wing even though the first thing you see is a big Sony sign as the film starts which gave me a little sense of foreboding.
Tom Holland, I’ve enjoyed this guys work since I saw him in Impossible back in 2012 at the age of 16, he was in decent acting company in that movie (Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor) and for me outshines them both. He continues to impress here too. The problems of teenage Peter Parker is what so many youngsters related to when first reading the comics. Combine that the cheek of Spider-Man and you have a well rounded performance.
Michael Keaton, What can you say about this guy? Oscar winner, Golden Globe winner, Beetlejuice…..fucking Batman!. He’s so good, I would watch this guy read the telephone directory. He brings a down to earth vibe to a villain that’s rarely seen. I love this performance! For me the best scene in the film had no action in it, it was Keaton and Holland in a car talking to each other.
The rest of the cast were fine I had a few points I could make but I just want to try and keep this review from sending people to sleep.
If anyone was worried it was going to be Iron Man heavy then fear not, he’s used sparingly, maybe 7 mins screen in total.
Now this movie is quite strange to me, if you break it down into its seperate pieces then it all works quite well. Screenplay, pacing, acting, direction and editing yet when put together there feels like there’s something missing. The film as a whole is less then the sum of its parts and it left me feeling a little bit meh. Now it’s not bad by any means just a bit… meh
The 3rd act fight, the wife and I (when talking about it last night) happily agreed took place on ‘the disco plane’ was just daft. Just watch it folks, it’s stupid.
All that being said it’s a damn sight better then the last 3 Spiderman films we’ve been subjected to and seeing as sony had something to do with it then it was more deadpool then fantastic 4. Also Holland is in at least 1 Infinity wars films and a Spiderman sequal set for 2018 and 2019 respectively and his acting alone is enough to keep me coming back for more.
So I’ll finish this reveiw by saying I want more Keaton, I want him in more films, I want him doing voiceovers in animation, I want him in tv shows and I want him reading my morning news!
