X-Men: Apocalypse
Directed by Bryan singer who directed Apt pupil, Valkyrie, Superman returns and one of my favourite films ever The Usual Suspects.
In these days of big budget superhero movie its almost not allowed to have an opinion that isn’t love or hate, the middle ground has been taken away. I’m taking it back….. This film is ok, not great and by no means bad.
After the shambles that was Fatastic 4 Fox had a lot of work to do, the studio went in the right direction with this film but come on now how could it not do?
This is Singer’s 5th X-Men film, as he left the much maligned X-Men 3 The Last Stand very early in production.
Bad bits first
This maybe is a movie too far for Singer and this franchise as whilst the idea was obviously sound (it’s the story X-men fans wanted to see) its direction seemed lacking.
The cast in this film is of the highest quality. Oscar Isaac is a great actor who has nailed the 3 previous films I’d seen him in (Star Wars, Ex-Machina and Drive). Jennifer Lawrence who excels in every film and this franchise is lucky to have her, Fassbender is always solid and lastly Olivia Munn is brilliant in Newsroom but they struggled to give stellar performances here because the script didn’t allow it. Sophie Turner was a huge let down for me. I love her in Game of Thrones but it seemed she needed much more training to be in an action role and her acting was too flat.
That being said there were many aspects of this film I enjoyed.
Evan Peters as quicksilver again shines and the scene with him showing his powers is even better then in Days of Future Past and is worth the admission fee alone.
Magneto in the woods and at Auschwitz scenes were brilliantly shot and acted. the Little cameo which was ruined in the trailer but was great to watch. The aforementioned actors together was fun to see and the action scenes were well shot and weren’t over bloated.
See it, enjoy it but don’t expect a masterpiece
